I never played when it was in arcades, but I understand the fervor that people have for the game. As I downloaded it in the office and started it up, several IGN Editors couldn't help but come over and watch, quoting lines from the game's dialog or telling anecdotal stories about how awesome it was in the past. Which is why I'm a little confused. I'm not sure whether it's my lack of nostalgia or something, but I don't get the overwhelming love people have for the game. It's not bad by any means -- quite the contrary, it's actually pretty damn fun -- but it's not the mind-blowing experience that people led me to believe. Maybe it's because the XBLA/PSN version doesn't have the moving seat and sound set up that made it the immersing experience that the arcade version was, but this isn't the type of game I'd recommend without question.

Like Star Fox, Climax is largely an on-rails shooter, with the player assuming control of one of three fighter jets as they attempt to blast everything out of the sky. You can move your plane around and vary your speed in order to dodge enemies and/or get a lock on them, but -- with the exception of when the game allows you to pick between two routes -- you're always heading down a pre-determined path. Bullets and rockets make up the bulk of your arsenal, but after the Climax bar is full, you can enter Climax Mode and slow down time long enough for you to target a huge group of enemies and destroy them at once.

The combat is simple to learn, but also satisfying to master: given the time and patience of multiple play throughs it is impressive how much skill I've developed in both my reaction time and ability to plot out routes to maximize my score. The thrill of competing to see who can wreak the most havoc is really the crux of the experience in Climax. If you're not the type of person who enjoys seeing a 100% or high letter grade at the end of a level, or who enjoys competing on leaderboards, then the appeal of Climax will be limited. It only takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete a run, so you really need to be the type who's interested in killing every last enemy on screen in order to stay motivated to play the game over and over. The story is almost non-existent, the levels are fairly repetitive, and you're largely doing the same moving and shooting through the duration of the game -- even on the Practice (play an individual level to work on technique) or Score Attack (you have infinite lives) modes. That sounds kind of boring, sure, but when you're in it to do just the tiniest bit better each time it's easy to get addicted to Climax's simple mechanics and small time commitment.
